Tugs

I rode the Scrambler up to Belfast and painted the tugboats - experimental approach - acrylic on 9x12 red primed OSB. Had Egon Schiele's "Houses On The Town Square In Klosterneuberg" in mind when I started but this ended up nothing like it. Didn't like it much at the conclusion in Belfast but found some redeeming qualities back in the studio.

I keep trying to make acrylic work for me - I just can't seem to get happy with it.

Frontin #4

Down in Rockland near the grain silos, this Coast Guard ship is having some work done on it. This a 10"x22" watercolor but I brought it into Artrage when I got back to repair a mistake I made with drawing the changes in the tide while I was painting. So it's kind of a hybrid watercolor/digital sketch.

Tugboat in Tigre

My friend, Jorge, picked us up at our hotel in Buenos Aires and drove us out to Tigre where we stopped at a market on one of the many canals. Valerie wandered around the market and Jorge and I sketched this scene in the late afternoon light. The temperature was perfect and tango music lofted to us from a houseboat downriver.

Tugboat

What a frustrating painting. I kept coming back to this one. I probably should have just left it alone but I kept coming back to it. I may come back to it again but for now it is done. This is 10"x22" on TR paper.

Tugboat (in progress)

I was down at the harbor again yesterday. They are still dredging. This time I got a little better view of the little tugboat that moves this massive barge around. Here is a link to the news story (yes, dredging is big news in Camden!) 10"x22" on Twinrocker paper.

Dredging the Harbor

This is my first painting of the year. I have a goal of completing at least one painting that I'm happy with every 2 weeks for the next year and I'm just squeaking this one in with hours to go. The scene is so complicated I could keep tweaking it for days but I think it sort of tells the story now. A couple of things I was playing with here: Line - I used ink and a stick on the excavator, a ballpoint pen in the middle and pencil in the background. Color - Saturated color in the foreground and more muted color going back.I sketched this down at the harbor and did most of the painting in the studio. This is 10"x22" on Twinrocker handmade watercolor paper.

Dredging the Harbor (in progress)

Lucky me. I walked down to the harbor and I found this. Every 15 years or so Camden dredges the harbor as silt from the river builds up. It was way more complicated a scene than I was looking for but I couldn't resist.

Winter Boats - Take 2

Winter Boats - Take 2 by Camden Sketcher
Winter Boats - Take 2, a photo by Camden Sketcher on Flickr.
This is the non-digital version. The digital version I posted earlier was pretty helpful in allowing me to discover how I wanted to finish off this "sketching" (my new term for something between a painting and a sketch). 10"x22" Twinrocker paper. Pencil, Ink & stick, watercolor.

Winter Boats

Winter Boat by Camden Sketcher
Winter Boat, a photo by Camden Sketcher on Flickr.
Rockport Harbor - the boats have been put up for Winter. I sketched this over a couple of days on site. The weather has been in the thirties so the watercolor is taking a little longer to dry and I am getting colder quicker. I photographed the unfinished image with my iphone then opened it up in my tablet and worked on it in Photoshop Touch. 10"x22" Twinrocker paper. Pencil, Ink & stick, watercolor with marks and tones added in PS touch.

I sketched these rocks down by the harbor on a cold afternoon late in the day. My paints started freezing and making some interesting effects . This is on Fluid watercolor paper 8"x20". Pencil and watercolor with some marks and tones added in PS Touch.
